Premier was formed in December of 1991, and was Kansas City's first fully comprehensive
preferred provider organization devoted exclusively to workers' compensation.
It became the first to be certified by the State of Missouri as a worker's compensation
managed care organization in 1992.
Premier currently serves hundreds of regional employers and insurers by providing
a system with centralized medical management to avoid delays, duplication and problems
while improving communication and facilitating an expeditious return to work.
Also because of the many employers and insurers utilizing Premier's managed care
services, Premier has been able to negotiate fee schedules and rates that significantly
"discount" these services.
The network of providers coordinated and discounted by Premier is prestigious and
has been referred to as the "Who's Who" of work comp in this region. Besides
using the primary care and occupational clinics as "gatekeepers", Premier contracts
with over 1,200 specialists and over 66 hospitals.
In summary, Premier is a dramatic innovation that borrows the proven medical management
and pricing systems from the group medical benefits side of insurance and implements
them in the casualty/workers compensation side of the business. Premier promises
significant improvements and cost savings, especially considering the legal right
of employers in Missouri to direct workers' compensation care to the "preferred
provider organization" Premier has established.
